Xbox One Licenses Stall the Outer Worlds Free Upgrade

Xbox One digital Outer Worlds owners need both expansions for Spacer’s Choice, because last-gen store licenses cannot grant a remaster that already includes DLC.

Xbox One digital owners of The Outer Worlds only get the free Spacer’s Choice Edition upgrade if they also own both expansions, Obsidian said, citing platform license limits. PC libraries and Game Pass on Series hardware flipped without that extra buy. Last-gen stores still sell the 2019 game.

The studio called the move a thanks upgrade. Console license plumbing decided who actually received it.

Last-Gen Stores Still Sell the 2019 Build

Obsidian moved to delist the base game on May 27, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, the Xbox PC App, the Windows Store, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG. PlayStation 5 lost the original listing a day later, on May 28, 2026, which the studio blamed on a platform restriction.

Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch were left alone. Those three still sell the 2019 build. Spacer’s Choice Edition, the 2023 remaster, is the only version new buyers can get on current-gen consoles and PC.

The sequel has been out since October 29, 2025. Collapsing the first game to one SKU on modern storefronts is the catalog cleanup that followed. Last-gen hardware was not part of that cleanup, which is why the original listing is still sitting on the Xbox One store.

Owners who already had the 2019 game keep it. It does not vanish from a library. The fight is over who is handed the remaster license, not over whether the old install still boots.

Xbox One Digital Copies Need Both Expansions

PC storefronts grant Spacer’s Choice from a base-game license, the core of how the free upgrade split by platform, while Xbox One digital copies do not. On May 27 the studio said Xbox One and PlayStation 4 digital players need the base game along with both DLCs, Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, because of platform limitations with entitlements.

Spacer’s Choice is not a patch on the 2019 executable. It is a separate current-gen product that already contains those expansions. Last-gen stores can attach a new license only when the account already holds every piece that product includes. PC shops can just grant the new app. That is the whole split.

WHO GETS THE REMARK FOR FREE

Store Original delisted Free Spacer’s Choice from base game Extra gate
Xbox Series X|S May 27, 2026 Yes if it was in the library None
Xbox PC App and Windows Store May 27, 2026 Yes None
Steam, Epic, GOG May 27, 2026 Yes None
Xbox One digital No No Both expansions or the expansion pass
PlayStation 4 digital No No Both expansions or the expansion pass
PlayStation 5 May 28, 2026 Yes if it was in the library None named in the April 30 note

After May 27 the remaster sells as the Spacer’s Choice Edition for $39.99 on Xbox. Last-gen prices moved the other way. The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 base game dropped to $24.99, and the DLCs dropped to $14.99. The two expansions are also sold as one cheaper pass going forward.

The live Xbox listing for the old paid upgrade still spells out the same license stack: you need the Xbox One base game plus both expansions on the same Microsoft account, signed in on a Series console. Game Pass subscribers are told they do not qualify for that upgrade SKU, because the subscription install is a different grant.

Why Game Pass Cleared and Xbox One Did Not

Game Pass on Xbox Series X|S was updated to Spacer’s Choice Edition on May 27, 2026. Obsidian said the Series subscription build is the remaster now. That grant never had to copy a last-gen DLC stack onto a new product ID, which is why the Series Game Pass install did not wait on Peril on Gorgon or Murder on Eridanos.

The 2019 game also remained available through Game Pass after the Xbox store delist, so a Series subscriber can still boot the old build, then move into the remaster. Xbox One digital buyers who paid for the 2019 SKU and skipped the expansions sit on the other side of that wall.

This remaster is not Smart Delivery. Smart Delivery maps one product across Xbox One and Series. Spacer’s Choice is a Series, PC, and PS5 SKU that already contains the expansions, so an Xbox One base license has nothing to map unless those expansions are already on the account.

German players who otherwise qualify still owe a ¢0.01 checkout, which the FAQ called a regional platform restriction. That penny charge is the same class of store rule as the DLC gate, just smaller.

Obsidian Support spent May 28 saying the thanks upgrade was the intent, then pointing at backend limits on consoles.

The $14.99 expansion pass would have been a cheaper apology than a week of support tickets. Making the DLC free for a short window would have closed the gap for last-gen digital libraries. The studio chose case-by-case emails instead, and last-gen disc owners who bought a digital copy after the Steam note still hit the same DLC wall.

The April 30 Note Already Split the Offer

The anger is not only about the May 27 FAQ. It is about a Steam post that sounded universal, then named a shorter platform list in the next breath.

If you have at least the base edition of The Outer Worlds in your digital library before May 27th, you will be receiving the Spacer’s Choice Edition free. That’s right, free! This is for all platforms that the Spacer’s Choice Edition is on (Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).

Obsidian Entertainment, April 30 Steam news post

A later paragraph in the same note told Xbox One and PlayStation 4 owners that after May 27 they would need the base game and both DLCs, and that the paid upgrade path was going away once they had everything. Readers who stopped at “That’s right, free!” treated last-gen like Series and PC. The FAQ then applied the DLC gate to Xbox One and PlayStation 4 digital owners even if they already held the base game.

People who bought the 2019 game on last-gen hardware during that window, after reading the free line, are the group Obsidian later told to write in.

THE UPGRADE CALENDAR

  1. March 7, 2023: Spacer’s Choice Edition ships on Xbox Series X|S as a paid remaster with both expansions inside.
  2. April 30, 2026: Obsidian posts the delist date, the free current-gen and PC upgrade, and the last-gen DLC rule for upgrades after May 27.
  3. May 27, 2026: The 2019 game comes off six modern storefronts. The FAQ says Xbox One and PlayStation 4 digital copies need both expansions. Series Game Pass updates to the remaster.
  4. May 28, 2026: PlayStation 5 is delisted. Obsidian Support apologises, asks April 30 to May 27 last-gen buyers to contact support, and keeps the DLC gate in place going forward.
  5. May 30, 2026: Support begins sending redeemable Spacer’s Choice codes to some players who write in with proof of a window purchase.
  6. August 26, 2026: Patch 2.5.10.0 adds a one-time save transfer into the remaster. Licenses do not change.

An Obsidian support email that circulated after those tickets said the studio had provided a redeemable code that grants the upgraded version directly. That is a manual patch for people who bought into the April 30 wording. It is not a store-level fix for every Xbox One library.

Physical Copies and the Missing Upgrade Path

Disc owners were never in the free line. The May 27 FAQ said Obsidian was still investigating a path for physical Xbox One and PlayStation 4 copies, and that it would not be ready on the digital date. The studio said it would update if it could make that work later.

No later public path has been posted. A disc in an Xbox One drive proves you bought the 2019 game. It does not put Peril on Gorgon, Murder on Eridanos, or a Series remaster license onto the Microsoft account. That is the same entitlement wall as the digital DLC gate, with a barcode instead of a missing add-on.

Some disc owners bought a digital last-gen copy after April 30, thinking that would qualify them, then found they still needed both expansions. The support window covers people who purchased the base game on Xbox One or PlayStation 4 between April 30 and May 27. It does not, on its face, convert a 2019 disc into Spacer’s Choice.

A September Patch Moves Saves, Not Licenses

Patch 2.5.10.0 landed on August 26, 2026, for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation. It does not hand Xbox One accounts the remaster. It moves a save, once, after the remaster license is already there.

WHAT PATCH 2.5.10.0 ACTUALLY CHANGES

  • The menu path: Transfer sits under Settings, Gameplay, Saved Games, Transfer the Outer Worlds Saves.
  • The limit: It is a one-time copy from the 2019 game into Spacer’s Choice Edition on the same machine.
  • The platforms: Official notes list PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5.
  • The trophy wall: Achievements will not transfer to PlayStation 5, again because of platform restrictions.

On Xbox consoles and the Xbox PC app, that transfer can also unlock the matching Spacer’s Choice achievements from progress already on the Xbox account. PlayStation trophy lists stay separate. Saves can move forward into the remaster. They cannot move back, because Spacer’s Choice added features such as grenades that the 2019 build does not have.

The patch is useful if you already received the remaster, including through Series Game Pass. It does nothing for an Xbox One digital library that still lacks both expansions.

What Xbox One Owners Can Do Now

Xbox One digital owners who already have Peril on Gorgon and Murder on Eridanos, or the expansion pass, should receive Spacer’s Choice on Series hardware without paying again. Anyone who bought the base game on Xbox One between April 30 and May 27, 2026, is told to write Obsidian Support. Disc owners still have no posted path.

If the account already holds both expansions, the paid upgrade path is gone and the remaster is supposed to just appear. If it does not, the May 28 note still says to contact support for any upgrade issues, not only for that April-to-May window.

Series Game Pass members can skip the store fight entirely. The subscription already serves Spacer’s Choice Edition on Xbox Series X|S, including through cloud on Premium and Ultimate. Buying the 2019 Xbox One SKU at $24.99 and then both expansions at $14.99 is the long way around a Game Pass install that already includes them.

New buyers on current-gen hardware and PC only see the $39.99 remaster. Last-gen storefronts still sell the 2019 game because those stores never had to grant a DLC-packed SKU they cannot attach. Xbox One libraries are living inside that leftover rule, and the August save tool does not rewrite it.
