Modern Warfare 4 Splits Its Audience Before the October Launch
Modern Warfare 4 launches October 23 on current-gen and Switch 2 after a closed beta, with Game Pass delayed until Holiday 2027 and last-gen Warzone on a.
Activision set Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 for Friday, October 23 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not ship on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. Infinity Ward’s campaign follows a North Korean invasion of the South, and the open beta that tested the new gunplay already ended on September 1.
The May 28 trailer sold trenches on the peninsula. The split that will last is who can actually play the annual Call of Duty, and on what, once Season 1 hits.
The Open Beta Closed on September 1
Call of Duty: NEXT ran at 9:00 AM PT on August 21, and the Early Access beta opened two hours later for players who had pre-ordered on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. That window ran through 10:00 AM PT on August 25. Game Pass did not count as a ticket, and Nintendo Switch 2 was held out of weekend one.
The open beta, the one anyone could download, ran from 10:00 AM PT on August 28 through 10:00 AM PT on September 1 on every supported platform, Switch 2 included. Activision served it as a separate install from the main Call of Duty app, with maps that included Rooftops, Silkworm, Transit 213, and Kill Block, plus a playable campaign mission. Rank capped at Level 30. One of the carry-forward rewards was the Beta Forged blueprint for the Han 86 assault rifle.

Infinity Ward closed the test with a public thank-you on September 2, pointing at the clips, the complaints, and the road still left to launch. The shooting was the part that landed. The surrounding systems, especially matchmaking, were the part that still felt unfinished when the servers went dark.

Private Park Fights a North Korean Invasion
The official pitch puts a young South Korean soldier, Private Park, on a routine patrol that collapses when the North launches a full-scale invasion. He is a conscript, not a special-operations operator, and the camera stays with his squad as cities fall and the counteroffensive starts. Captain Price runs a second track in the same war, off the books, hunting a weapon that Infinity Ward says can shift the balance of power after he turned on the system that made him.
Narrative director Jeff Negus and associate design director Alex Norris walked through first details on the campaign the day of the reveal. Negus called the new group one of the largest casts the studio has put in a Call of Duty game, and he named the Korean fireteam in plain terms.
Several of them are members that were conscripted and find themselves thrust into a battlefield. This is Park, Jay, Cho, and Moon.
Jeff Negus, Narrative Director, Infinity Ward, on Xbox Wire
Two embedded U.S. Marines, West and Dunn, round out that six-person vehicle crew. Price’s orbit still includes familiar faces from the reboot, among them Ghost and Valeria Garza, now in uneasy company with a captain the official copy calls an operator-turned-outlaw. Negus told interviewers at the reveal that the studio treats the setting as entertainment, then described the research stack behind it: dialect coaches, consultants, and Korean colleagues, some of whom had done conscript time themselves.
The peninsula is the new ground. The globetrotting habit of the series is still in the shot list. Official mission language names trench fighting in Korea, close-quarters work in New York, vehicle chases in Paris, SAS night raids in Mumbai, and city assaults to take occupied ground back.
CAMPAIGN COMBAT ZONES
- Korea: Ground-level trench fighting and collapsing cities through Park’s squad, the opening of the invasion.
- New York: Close-quarters missions once the war spills off the peninsula.
- Paris: High-speed chases written into the same campaign arc.
- Mumbai: SAS night raids, the covert half of Price’s off-book war.
- Occupied cities: Combined-arms assaults to reclaim territory after the front has moved.
Infinity Ward is selling that mix as darker and more dangerous than the last few Modern Warfare games, with long-running plotlines pushed to a breaking point. The beta already let people play one campaign mission, so the tone is no longer only a trailer promise. The rest of Park’s war stays locked until digital pre-orders get in on October 16.
Nintendo Switch 2 Gets a Native Infinity Ward Port
Modern Warfare 4 is being built natively for Nintendo Switch 2 with Digital Legends, a return to a Nintendo platform for the first time in over 13 years. Nintendo of America posted the date the morning of the May 28 reveal and told players to wait on pre-order details. Those Switch 2 pre-orders opened at 9:00 AM PT on August 26, the same morning that platform could preload the open beta.

Hands-on footage from the beta showed docked multiplayer aiming at 60 frames with softer resolution, shorter draw distance, and thinner character models than the PlayStation 5 and Xbox builds. That is the deal Digital Legends is striking: the mode list and the gunfeel travel with the cartridge-sized machine, and the image pays for it. Gyro aiming is in. Weekend one never was. Anyone who wanted the Switch 2 build had to wait for the open weekend like everyone who had not pre-ordered on the other platforms.
PC is getting its own pass from Infinity Ward and Beenox, with minimum beta specs at a Ryzen 5 1600 or Core i5-8400, 12 GB of RAM, and a GTX 970 or 1060, and recommended specs at a Ryzen 5 3600 or Core i7-8700, 16 GB, and an RX 6700 XT or RTX 3060 Ti. An SSD is required. Online play in the beta also required TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot for Ricochet. Shader preloading and fewer “update requires restart” loops are the quality-of-life bets for launch, though Switch 2 will still restart for data patches.
Last-Gen Warzone Stays Up Until Season 1
The current-gen wall is already in force for the premium game, and it is on a calendar for the free one. Warzone left last-gen storefronts on June 4. The in-game store on those Xbox One and PlayStation 4 clients came down on June 25. Progress and Call of Duty Points stay tied to the Activision account, so a move to a Series X or a PS5 does not wipe the locker, but the old boxes themselves are on borrowed time.
When Modern Warfare 4’s Season 1 starts, shortly after October 23, Warzone on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One stops being playable. That is the actual last-gen funeral, not the June delist. Players who still have the client installed have been able to keep dropping in through Black Ops 7’s remaining last-gen season, then the lights go out when the new integration begins. Other Call of Duty discs on those machines are unaffected for now. Warzone is the one that has to live in the same technical envelope as the annual game, and that envelope no longer includes 2013 hardware.
Is Modern Warfare 4 on Xbox Game Pass?
No. Not at launch, and not for a long window after it. Xbox has been sending Game Pass members a direct notice that Modern Warfare 4 will not be in the catalog on October 23 and that Game Pass availability starts Holiday 2027. The same notice points at the Microsoft Store. After two annual games on day one, the company is using the product page and the inbox to stop people from booting the app on launch morning and finding a buy button.
That is the first time since Microsoft bought Activision that the new Call of Duty will skip day-one Game Pass. Early Access to the beta followed the same rule: a pre-order or a code, not a subscription. Eligible members who have played a qualifying Call of Duty through Game Pass can still take the 10% loyalty discount on Vault Edition, which is a coupon, not a substitute for the missing day-one drop. Vault Edition stacks operator packs for Price, Valeria, Ghost, and Blix, a four-nation Special Forces pack with local voice tracks, five signature weapons, one season of BlackCell, and a DMZ bonus, plus the campaign early-access window that starts October 16 for digital pre-orders.
WHO CAN PLAY AT LAUNCH
| Platform | October 23 | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Yes, including Xbox Play Anywhere | Not in Game Pass until Holiday 2027 |
| PlayStation 5 | Yes | No PlayStation 4 version |
| PC (Battle.net, Steam, Xbox on PC) | Yes | Beta online play required TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | Missed Early Access; native port with Digital Legends |
| Xbox One and PlayStation 4 | No | Warzone playable only until Season 1 |
The buy-it-now path is the whole plan for the first year on Xbox. Holiday 2027 is also, in practice, the next Call of Duty’s season, so a subscriber who refuses to pay twice will live one game behind on purpose.
Kill Block Rebuilds the Map Between Rounds
Modern Warfare 4 still launches with 12 Core 6v6 maps, each with its own infil, plus dedicated Gunfight arenas and larger Big War maps for vehicles and infantry. The map that Activision has spent the summer explaining is Kill Block, set inside the West Bridge Advanced Military Training facility, an off-the-books live-fire range whose floor physically changes between matches.
Three modular slabs, two ends and one center, lock together into a combo about the size of Shoot House from Modern Warfare (2019). Electric motors drop a slab into a pit, switch the rails, and winch a new one into place. Official copy says that system can produce more than 500 configurations at launch, with more sections promised in live seasons. Weather rigs on some slabs throw rain or snow, and weapons pick up a wet sheen or ice until you reload or swap. Familiar Modern Warfare geometry shows up as individual slabs, including Crash, Highrise, Shoot House, and Storage Town, then plays differently because the neighbors keep changing.
KILL BLOCK AT LAUNCH
- Footprint: Three slabs per match, always the same rectangle, roughly Shoot House sized.
- Modes: Gunfight 3v3 and the new Gunfight 10v10 at launch, with Search and Destroy and Domination already in testing for later.
- Tells: Spray-painted slab names, perimeter sector codes, and infil cards that announce the combo before the gates open.
- Weather: Clear, rain, or snow on selected slabs, with visibility and weapon finish shifting in the storm.
Public play started at Fanatics Fest, July 16 through 19 at the Javits Center, in 10v10 Gunfight. The beta put that loop on everyone’s machines. The complaint that followed was less “I do not understand the moving walls” and more that getting into the next combo still ran through the same matchmaking grind as a normal playlist.
Around Kill Block, Infinity Ward is hanging new 6v6 modes. Hijack is a 6v6 data-spike carry. Arms Deal is a 5v5 buy-your-loadout, single-life riff on Search and Destroy. Frontline is a 6v6 spawn-from-base tug of war. Ground War’s next form is Combat Outpost, with two Hajin maps in the beta, Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium, where squads spend resources to keep pushing objectives under air streaks.
How Ballistic Authority Changes Gunplay
Infinity Ward’s name for the new shooting stack is Ballistic Authority. The studio’s own line is the one that matters, because it is the design bet the rest of the year has to live on.
The promise is simple: no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt. Every shot tells the truth.
Call of Duty Staff, Modern Warfare 4 announcement
Hipfire no longer sprays inside a random cone. Recoil, convergence, and handling were rebuilt to track the stick or the mouse more directly. Depth of field and muzzle effects were pulled back so targets stay readable while you fire. Field of view now frames the weapon without shrinking what you are aiming at. That is the “grounded” claim in mechanical form: fewer hidden dice rolls, more blame on the player.
Movement was rebuilt in the same pass. Mantle Slide lets you come off a mantle into a slide. Mantle Steering lets you aim, veer, or abort in the middle of the vault. Supine Slide, a double-tap crouch from a sprint, puts you on your back with feet forward in a doorway. Pipe climbs, hang shimmies, and hang leans add vertical routes that older Modern Warfare games treated as decoration. The beta made the difference obvious in close range, where assault rifles now go where the barrel sits instead of rolling a hipfire check. Sniping also came back into favor for players who had bounced off the last Black Ops sandbox.
Create-a-Class now parks the operator, streaks, perks, and guns in one loadout. Gunny, a gunnery-sergeant helper, can stamp a short, long, or balanced build from what you have unlocked. Apex Attachments show up once a gun is fully leveled and change how it behaves rather than stacking another muzzle. Prestige splits in two: Classic resets Create-a-Class the old way, Regular keeps the unlocks and still hands out its own rewards. Weapon camo tracks run across multiplayer, DMZ, and Warzone, with three mastery camos in each mode and nine in all. Smartstreaks count objective play toward the same meter as kills. None of that replaces a playlist that still feels hostile, which is why the beta’s reputation split between the guns and the session around them.
Season 1 Moves Warzone Onto Hajin and Zodiac
DMZ is back as Infinity Ward’s extraction mode, with players dropped in as off-the-books assets to recover military tech, loot, cut deals, and leave before the zone closes. Weather and rotating military objectives are the pressure. The full extraction-style DMZ coming back is a live-service loop, not a bonus playlist, and it sits on Hajin, the same Korean conflict space feeding Combat Outpost.
Season 1 is also when Warzone takes the handoff. Beenox’s new Resurgence map, Zodiac, brings a train as the tactical gimmick. Hajin itself is slated for Battle Royale. Integration starts shortly after October 23, which is the same window that turns the lights off for last-gen Warzone. The full game stays inside the connected Call of Duty install with Warzone so the two can share content and keep the dual download smaller than two separate clients. The beta was the exception, a sidecar build so people could play without waiting on HQ.
Digital pre-orders get the campaign on October 16. Multiplayer, DMZ, and the rest of the package stay on Friday, October 23 on current-generation hardware, with Switch 2 in that same stack. Game Pass members who hold out are looking at Holiday 2027. Last-gen Warzone players are looking at Season 1. The Korean campaign is what the trailer asked people to feel. The calendar is what decides who is still in the fight when the trenches go live.
