Dragonwilds Hits Xbox, but Steam Saves Stay Put
RuneScape Dragonwilds lands on Xbox Series X|S and Game Pass on September 15, with Play Anywhere on the Microsoft Store and Steam saves left behind.
RuneScape: Dragonwilds launches on Xbox Series X|S on September 15, 2026, as the first RuneScape game on the platform. It is on Game Pass the same day, and the Xbox store stamps it as a Play Anywhere title.
That badge is real, and it is narrower than a Steam veteran might hope. Jagex already said early-access saves stay on Steam, so console night is a fresh character next to a year-old PC world.
RuneScape’s First Night on Xbox
Jake Blunt, Jagex’s senior community manager, called the Xbox ship the first RuneScape title on Xbox in 25 years. The 1.0 build is a survival RPG on Ashenfall, a hidden continent in Gielinor, for one player or a co-op group of up to four.
You grind skills from 1 to 99, use Skill Spells on the wilds, and work toward Kuldra, the Dragon Queen. It is not RuneScape 3 and it is not Old School RuneScape. Jagex built a Valheim-style gather-build-craft loop and hung the 25-year lore on it.
The studio also said the game is for Series X|S only. The store page repeats that line in the description, even though its device list is messier.
LAUNCH SNAPSHOT
- The date: Version 1.0 lands on September 15, 2026, on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC.
- The Xbox path: Jagex is putting the game day one on Xbox Game Pass, with a buy option beside it.
- The PC year: Steam Early Access opened on April 15, 2025, and Jagex says more than one million players jumped in.
- The franchise: Jagex puts RuneScape at over 300 million player accounts as the series enters its 25th year in 2026.
Old School RuneScape’s official account posted on September 8 that a new chapter begins with this launch, and it swapped in an Ashenfall-themed login screen to mark the week.
Play Anywhere Stops at the Microsoft Store
The Xbox product page lists Xbox Play Anywhere on the store listing, plus Xbox cloud saves and play on PC and supported handhelds. Microsoft’s own Play Anywhere page is blunt about the loop: you buy once, then you play on an Xbox console, a Windows PC, and a supported handheld, and your saves, add-ons, and achievements move with the same account.
That is the feature Xbox buyers have used as a purchase test for years, and it is why Play Anywhere support on Xbox keeps showing up next to this date. It does not, by itself, reach Steam, Epic, or the Jagex Launcher.
WHAT PLAY ANYWHERE ACTUALLY TIES TOGETHER
- The license: A digital Xbox or Microsoft Store copy is playable on Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and supported handhelds at no extra charge.
- The progress: Cloud saves, add-ons, and achievements follow the Xbox account from screen to screen.
- The wall: A Steam Early Access copy is a different storefront, and Jagex has already said that progress does not move onto new platforms.
- The session rule: You still play that Xbox copy on one device at a time, which is how Play Anywhere titles have always worked.
If you plan to bounce from a Series X in the living room to a handheld on a train, the Microsoft Store path is the one that keeps the same character. A Steam library sitting next to it will not.
Keep the Steam House on Steam
On June 2, 2026, three days before the Xbox date went public, Jagex community voice Mod Doom posted a console FAQ. The save answer is the line Xbox coverage keeps skipping.
Not across platform. We’ve got Steam Cloud Save support, but your progress will not carry over to new platforms. You can crossplay your existing characters on Steam with other platforms when they launch, but won’t be able to transfer your saves from Early Access into the new platforms.
Mod Doom, Jagex, Dragonwilds console FAQ
Read that twice. Steam characters can still progress will not carry over as a transfer, yet those same characters can squad with Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch 2 players after 1.0. The house you built on Ashenfall during Early Access stays a Steam house. The person who starts on Game Pass starts at 1.
Creative director Rick Turek, known as Mod Rook, told players in April 2025 that Epic Online Services was in the build because Unreal gave Jagex a path to later crossplay and cross-saves. The June 2026 FAQ is the later, harder rule: crossplay yes, save transfer no.
The practical split is ugly in a good way for friends and rough for completionists. A Steam host can keep a dedicated world running and let a Series X friend walk in. That friend cannot copy the world onto an Xbox profile and take it offline to the couch as the same save.
Game Pass, Crossplay, and Level 1
Jagex confirmed Game Pass on August 19, 2026, from Cambridge. The 1.0 build is free to subscribers on September 15, which is the widest on-ramp RuneScape has ever had on a Microsoft device. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium get the same day-one treatment on PS5. Switch 2 is a paid digital standard edition only.
The studio’s own account posted the Game Pass trailer the same day. Microsoft’s Game Pass account replied in RuneScape dialect.

The Xbox Game Pass account wrote, “i’m more excited than a gnome child with a swamp toad!” That is the tone of the Xbox pitch: low friction, in-joke, download tonight. The quieter consequence is a flood of new characters walking into worlds that Steam players have been tuning since April 2025.
Crossplay is the bridge Jagex chose instead of a merged save. Console players and Steam players can hunt the same dragon. They cannot share the same attic chest unless they are in the same session on the same world host. The ask that keeps coming back is bigger than Play Anywhere: people want a Switch 2 purchase, a Game Pass night, and a Steam year to be one character. Jagex has not offered that.
WHAT WE KNOW
- Game Pass day one: Jagex’s August 19 release says subscribers can play the 1.0 version for free on September 15.
- Crossplay: Jagex is shipping crossplay across the new platforms, and Steam characters can group with console players.
- Offline solo: The June 2 FAQ says the full Kuldra saga can be played offline solo from day one.
WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED
- Which Game Pass plans: Jagex named Xbox Game Pass, not a specific tier, and the store page’s subscription module was still blank when checked.
- Steam-to-Xbox save tools: Nothing public since the June 2 FAQ reverses the no-transfer rule.
Console online multiplayer still needs Game Pass Essential, Premium, or Ultimate, per the store fine print. A Game Pass subscriber already has that covered. Someone who only buys the game still needs a multiplayer-capable plan to group up.
Ashenfall Tripled Before Version 1.0
Blunt wrote that the map tripled over the project’s last stretch and gained three new regions, area bosses, material upgrades, and classic RuneScape gear, with a post-1.0 roadmap aimed at 2027 and beyond. Dedicated servers also arrived earlier than Jagex first planned, after players pushed for them.
Steam still lists the Early Access build as Very Positive, with 82% of 22,417 English reviews marked positive. That is a year of public grading, not a closed beta. Xbox is inheriting a game that already had its messy middle on PC.
THE ROAD TO 1.0
- April 15, 2025: Steam Early Access opens, with one dragon to hunt and a continent still filling in.
- December 2025: Fellhollow, the first major update, adds a realm tied to Death.
- June 2, 2026: Jagex confirms PlayStation 5 and publishes the save and crossplay FAQ.
- June 5, 2026: The Xbox Series X|S date and the shared September 15, 2026 1.0 lock in.
- June 23, 2026: Umbral Sands, the last major Early Access region, ships with heat, shade, and a new boss.
- July 29, 2026: Digital deluxe and physical preorders open, and Jagex adds a Jagex Launcher PC storefront.
- August 19, 2026: Day-one Xbox Game Pass is confirmed.
- September 15, 2026: 1.0 launches everywhere listed, with the Scorned Wilderness raid and the Kuldra fight.
Seventeen months separate the Steam open and the console night. Xbox players are not walking into a thin vertical slice. They are walking into a map that already grew three times, then stopping at a raid the PC crowd has been pointed at all summer.
What Xbox Players Get on Day One
Xbox Series X|S players get the 1.0 survival RPG on September 15, 2026, through Game Pass or a digital purchase, with Play Anywhere to Microsoft PC and handhelds, 1-4 player sessions, skills from 1 to 99, and crossplay into Steam, PlayStation 5, and Switch 2. They do not get a Steam save import, an Xbox One version, or a disc that day.
The store lists 4K Ultra HD, HDR10, ray tracing, 60 fps+, spatial sound, variable refresh rate, Xbox achievements, cloud saves, and console keyboard and mouse. ESRB has it TEEN for Violence, Blood, and Mild Language, and the listing flags In-Game Purchases and Users Interact.
Skill Spells are the hook that is not generic survival. Jagex’s own copy still sells a spectral axe, a blink, bones into peaches, a tornado of fish, and ore veins that pop on command. That is the RuneScape joke living inside a gathering loop.
WHERE EACH STOREFRONT STANDS ON SEPTEMBER 15
| Storefront | How you play 1.0 | Progress |
|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X|S | Game Pass or digital buy | Play Anywhere with Microsoft PC and handhelds; no Steam import |
| Microsoft Store PC | Play Anywhere copy | Shared with the Xbox character |
| Steam | Leaves Early Access into 1.0 | Steam Cloud; characters can crossplay, saves stay |
| Epic Games Store and Jagex Launcher | Digital standard and deluxe | Separate PC storefronts from Xbox |
| PlayStation 5 | Buy, or Plus Extra and Premium | No Steam transfer |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Digital standard only | Crossplay, no transfer |
Buy the Xbox edition if the living-room box is the main machine and a Windows handheld is the spare. Stay on Steam if the year of building is the thing you refuse to redo. Do both only if you want two characters on purpose.
Q4 Physical Editions for Series X
Jagex opened deluxe and physical preorders on July 29, 2026. Digital deluxe is on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC. Physical standard and deluxe editions are listed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X in Q4 2026, after the digital day. Switch 2 stays digital standard in the August 19 rundown.
The boxed deluxe bundle, as Jagex described it, includes a steelbook, embroidered combat-skill patches, holographic character cards, gilded armour and a cape as craftable extras, and six Old School-style low-poly helmets. A disc in the living room will not fix the Steam gap. It is a shelf object for people who want the 1.0 edition in plastic.
Xbox players who stream or buy Dragonwilds on September 15 will hold a Microsoft Store copy that follows them to PC and handhelds. Steam friends can still walk into the same session on the characters they already have. The house those friends built in Early Access remains a Steam file.
