Asahi Linux macOS 27 Warning Puts Dual Boot Access on Hold
Asahi Linux macOS 27 warning tells Apple Silicon users to skip the Golden Gate beta after Startup Disk stops showing Linux installs and data stays on disk.
The Asahi Linux macOS 27 warning is simple: don’t put Golden Gate beta on an Apple Silicon Mac that you still need for Linux booting. Asahi says macOS 27 changes the way the boot picker and Startup Disk detect valid OS boot volumes, so an existing Asahi partition will not be visible as a boot choice.
The project says the partition remains on disk and user data has not been lost. The break sits in the selection path, which matters because Apple Silicon Macs use Startup Options, Startup Disk, and recoveryOS pieces to choose what starts next.
The Warning Starts at the Boot Picker
Asahi put the warning Asahi published for users after testing the macOS 27 Golden Gate beta. The public line was short.
PSA for #AsahiLinux users: Do NOT upgrade to macOS 27 Golden Gate!
MacTrast captured the rest of the post as Asahi’s explanation of the failure. The project said Apple changed how the boot picker and Startup Disk applications detect valid OS boot volumes, and it said the Asahi partition will not be visible when either tool is used from macOS 27.
Asahi also said it believes the behavior is a bug and filed report FB22994760 with Apple. Apple’s developer site lists a macOS 27 beta release entry dated June 8, 2026 for build 26A5353q.

Why the Selector Matters on Apple Silicon
Apple’s support pages describe a startup flow that depends on a visible choice. On a Mac with Apple silicon, Apple says the startup options screen appears after the user holds the power button and shows startup disks plus a gear icon labeled Options.
Startup Disk is another route. The Mac User Guide says a Mac can start from a network volume, a different disk, or another operating system, and its startup disk selection steps say to pick the disk icon and click Restart.
| Route | Documented Behavior | macOS 27 Beta Warning |
|---|---|---|
| Startup Options | Apple says the screen shows available startup disks and Options. | Asahi says its partition will not be visible from macOS 27. |
| Startup Disk | Apple says this setting can choose a disk and restart the Mac. | Asahi says detection of valid OS boot volumes changed. |
| Recovery Environment | Apple Platform Security lists paired recoveryOS for holding the power button from shutdown. | Asahi says the boot picker runs in the default boot volume’s recovery environment. |
The Missing Partition Is a Visibility Problem
The strongest reassurance in Asahi’s post is about storage. The project told users who already installed the beta that the partition is still there and that they have not lost any data.
That still leaves a hard access problem. A user can have the Asahi install sitting on disk and no visible entry to choose in the normal Apple Silicon boot path.
Phoronix described the immediate Linux effect in one line: with macOS 27 beta, the Asahi Linux partition is no longer visible and the Apple Silicon Linux installation is unable to boot for the time being.
Linuxiac reported the same access issue on June 10, 2026, saying the current warning concerns macOS 27 Golden Gate, which is still in beta. Its report also said the Asahi installation remains present on disk while macOS 27’s boot selection tools stop showing it as a valid startup volume.
Fedora Asahi Remix Turns This into a Daily Driver Issue
Asahi’s own Fedora Asahi Remix installation page describes the distro as the most polished Linux for Apple Silicon Macs. The page also tells users to install from macOS and labels the project as Fedora Linux 44 plus Apple Silicon.
The same page says Fedora Asahi Remix is the result of a close multi-year collaboration between the Asahi Linux project and the Fedora Project. It also says all Asahi platform-specific packages are in upstream Fedora and fully supported in Fedora Linux 44.
Asahi lists support for M1 and M2 series MacBook, Mac Mini, Mac Pro, Mac Studio, and iMac devices. Those are the machines named by the project page, and they are the machines where a broken boot selector can strand an existing Linux install behind a missing option.
The Installer Patch Is a Guardrail
Asahi says it patched the installer to prevent it from running on macOS 27 until the project has some idea of what is going on. The patched installer will print a version of the same message and exit if someone runs it from the macOS 27 beta.
The practical result is narrow. A user testing Golden Gate cannot use the normal Asahi installer path from that beta.
The install route is visible on Asahi’s own page: it shows curl https://alx.sh | sh under Install from macOS. That puts the macOS-version block at the first step for anyone starting fresh from Golden Gate.
Recovery Depends on a macOS 26 Way Back
Asahi’s recovery advice starts with an older default Startup Disk. If a user has already upgraded and also has a secondary installation of macOS 26 or below, Asahi says setting that installation as the default Startup Disk should restore access to Asahi.
The broader beta advice is more cautious. In its instructions for macOS developer betas, Apple says beta software is for developers to test apps for compatibility, and it tells users to always back up a Mac before installing beta software.
- Before installing: Apple says to back up the Mac and devices before beta software.
- If already upgraded: Asahi says to set macOS 26 or below as the default Startup Disk when such a secondary installation exists.
- If reporting the bug: Apple says Feedback Assistant is available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and the web for issues and enhancement requests.
- If going back: Apple says to restore from the backup created before installing the beta.
Older macOS Volumes May Share the Pain
AppleInsider reported that the issue may reach users with older macOS versions on separate partitions. Its early testing, the site said, showed similar problems for those users.
That part is single-source testing, so it should stay in its lane. Asahi’s confirmed warning names Asahi partitions; AppleInsider’s test names older macOS partitions.
Apple’s own guide frames Startup Disk as the place where the user chooses a disk and restarts. Asahi and AppleInsider both describe failures at that choice point, with different targets named.
Apple Lists the Beta While Asahi Blocks Installs
Apple’s developer release page lists macOS 27 beta (26A5353q) with a June 8, 2026 date. Apple’s public beta page says new public betas for iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, tvOS 27, HomePod software 27, watchOS 27 and AirPods Firmware are coming soon.
Asahi’s installer language says the block stays until the project has some idea of what is going on. The advice for users remains narrow: skip Golden Gate beta on any Mac where Asahi Linux boot access matters.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should Asahi Linux users install macOS 27 Golden Gate beta?
No. Asahi tells users not to upgrade to macOS 27 Golden Gate because its boot picker and Startup Disk behavior can hide an existing Asahi partition.
Did macOS 27 delete the Asahi Linux partition?
Asahi says the partition is still present and user data has not been lost. The reported failure is that the partition stops appearing as a boot option from macOS 27.
Why does Asahi vanish from Startup Disk?
Asahi says Apple changed how the boot picker and Startup Disk detect valid OS boot volumes. When either tool is used from macOS 27, the Asahi partition is no longer shown.
How can a user restore access after upgrading?
If a secondary macOS 26 or below installation is available, Asahi says setting it as the default Startup Disk should restore access to the Asahi partition.
What did Asahi change in its installer?
Asahi says it patched the installer so it exits on macOS 27 for now. The installer is meant to print a version of the warning instead of continuing from the beta.
