The Blood of Dawnwalker Sells 1 Million on a Risky Clock
Rebel Wolves’ 30-day Xbox RPG hit 1 million copies by September 5. The clock is the product, and Series S still runs at 30 FPS.
The Blood of Dawnwalker sold 1 million copies by September 5, two days after it arrived on Xbox Series X and Series S. Rebel Wolves and publisher Bandai Namco posted the figure themselves. The Warsaw studio priced the Standard Edition at $69.99 (£59.99) and shipped a 30-day time budget that Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said he could not have made at CD Projekt Red. Critics parked the game at 83 on Metacritic. The argument on Xbox is still about that clock.
Hotfix 1.0.4 started rolling to Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC on September 9, the same week Steam logged an all-time peak of 78,188 concurrent players.
The Blood of Dawnwalker Sells 1 Million Copies in Two Days
The review embargo lifted on August 31. The September 3 Xbox release date held. Two days later the studio called 1 million copies a worldwide total across Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC, including Steam and GOG.
LAUNCH SCORECARD
- Copies sold: 1 million worldwide as of September 5, per Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco.
- Metacritic: 83 from 63 critic reviews, listed as Generally Favorable, with 56 positive (89%), 7 mixed (11%), and 0 negative.
- OpenCritic: 85, Mighty, 93rd percentile, with 93% of critics recommending the game.
- Steam peak: 78,188 concurrent players on September 6, per SteamDB.
User scores on Metacritic sat at 8.2 from 587 ratings. Critic Travis Northup gave it 9 out of 10 and called it one of the year’s best open-world RPGs. Diego Nicolás Argüello, reviewing on PlayStation 5, landed at 70 and said the clock’s pressure faded once a point of no return arrived with 13 days still on the board.
That spread is the launch. High nines treat the time budget as the point of the game. The 70 treats it as a trick that stops biting. Neither camp is arguing about whether Coen of Laslea looks like another scarred monster-hunter from Poland.
How the 30-Day Clock Works
You play Coen, human by day and vampire by night, in the 14th-century valley of Vale Sangora. Vampire lord Brencis holds Coen’s family for a coronation. The pitch is 30 days and 30 nights to get them back. There is no real-time countdown. Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, the game’s creative director, has been repeating that since summer because players kept hearing a fail state that is not in the build.
The game doesn’t end when you run out of time.
Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz, creative director, Rebel Wolves
Each day and each night is a bar of eight segments. Only actions marked with an hourglass spend a segment. Walking Vale Sangora, browsing a stall, or fighting a pack of wolves does not move the calendar. Quests do. Opening some chests does. Learning skills does. Repairing some fast-travel points does. The studio’s own math is 480 spendable units: 30 days and 30 nights, eight segments each.
Narrative director Jakub Szamalek put the trade in blunt terms. Care about the family, and you pick which jobs are worth a slice of the bar. Stop caring, and you can comb the map while they die. Mateusz compared that path to an evil run in Baldur’s Gate 3. It is a viable campaign, not a game-over screen.
WHERE EXPERTS DISAGREE
- The clock as pressure: Argüello said the warning about a point of no return arrived with 13 days left, after which the urgency dropped away.
- The clock as budget: Mateusz designed those 480 units as currency for quests, and Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said most activities still make sense after day 30 because they are not chained to the coronation.
Some PC players were already looking for ways to stretch or disable the timer within days of launch. The design assumes you will not finish every thread in one save, and that is the part completionists keep pushing on.
Konrad Tomaszkiewicz Left CD Projekt to Build This
Tomaszkiewicz co-directed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and later worked as a secondary director on Cyberpunk 2077. He founded Rebel Wolves in 2022 in Warsaw and took a roster with him: art director Bartłomiej Gaweł, writer Jakub Szamalek, design director Daniel Sadowski, animation director Tamara Zawada, and, later, Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz as creative director. The company sold a quarter of itself to NetEase to fund the game. Bandai Namco handles publishing and marketing. The team sits at 160 people, close to the Witcher 3 average of 160 that Konrad has cited, and he has said he wants it to stay that size.
Asked whether the narrative sandbox and the time rules could have been built at CD Projekt Red, he said, “I think I couldn’t.” Big companies with established series, he argued, get asked for the same thing with a new coat. Rebel Wolves wanted the mistakes and the odd ideas. The Blood of Dawnwalker is the first chapter of a planned Dawnwalker Saga that would follow Coen’s long life toward the present day, if this chapter earns the next one.
The Witcher comparisons were never going to miss. Dialogue trees, monster contracts, a scarred lead, even composer Mikołaj Stroiński on the score. Konrad has said he is comfortable with that. The bet was never a clean break from the last job. It was a clock, a sandbox with one main quest, and a studio small enough to ship both.
Xbox Series S Stays Locked at 30 FPS
Xbox is a full launch platform, not a port that arrived late. The store lists Xbox Play Anywhere at $69.99 for the Standard Edition, with the Eclipse Edition at $79.99. Bandai Namco’s own guide lays out four official editions, including a $199.99 Collector’s box. Pre-orders threw in the Sangoran Wayfarer’s Armor Set, which the Xbox page notes can also be unlocked later in the game. The listing is Optimized for Series X|S, with 4K, ray tracing, achievements, cloud saves, and Xbox Cloud Gaming support. Game Pass is not on that page.
Frame rate is where the two Xbox boxes split. After console footage showed 30 and 40 FPS targets, Rebel Wolves confirmed a day-one Performance mode for Series X, PS5, and PS5 Pro. Series S was left on a single 30 FPS target.
CONSOLE FRAME TARGETS
| Platform | Performance | Balanced | Quality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X | 60 FPS target | 40 FPS target | 30 FPS target |
| Xbox Series S | Not offered | Not offered | 30 FPS only |
| PlayStation 5 | 60 FPS target | 40 FPS target | 30 FPS target |
| PlayStation 5 Pro | 60 FPS target, extra visuals | 40 FPS target | 30 FPS target |
The studio wrote that Performance mode had been in testing and that it was not ready to promise until the last round of results. “We heard your feedback. It was clear how much this mattered to many of you, so we focused on finishing the next round of tests,” Rebel Wolves posted from the Dawnwalker account. The modes are targets, not floors. Series S owners still buy the same $69.99 game and still get one setting.
Unreal Engine 5 is the other half of that bill. Some PC owners described hitching frame times and a cutscene cap that made the debut feel poorer than the art. Hands-on posts from Xbox Ally X owners, by contrast, called the handheld launch clean. The split is hardware, not a single Xbox verdict.
Combat, Bugs, and a September 9 Hotfix
Combat is the other place the 83 comes apart. Reviewers who liked the writing still called sword fights serviceable, repetitive, or a parry pattern you learn and then repeat. Skills that cost time to unlock make that grind part of the calendar, which is clever on paper and sour when a dull loop spends a night.
Launch week has been a patch week. Hotfix 1.0.2 went out on September 3 for quest blockers, including Farkas becoming unreachable and Lunka getting lost in the tutorial. Hotfix 1.0.3 on September 4 added DualSense support on Steam and GOG. Hotfix 1.0.4 on September 9 is the first one that also reads like a console rescue.
LAUNCH WEEK FIXES
- August 31, 2026: Review embargo lifts; scores land in the low 80s with a wide spread.
- September 3, 2026: Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC launch; Hotfix 1.0.2 ships for quest blockers.
- September 4, 2026: Hotfix 1.0.3 adds DualSense support on Steam.
- September 5, 2026: Rebel Wolves and Bandai Namco announce 1 million copies sold.
- September 6, 2026: Steam concurrent players peak at 78,188.
- September 9, 2026: Hotfix 1.0.4 rolls to PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.
The Hotfix 1.0.4 patch notes fix a save bug, several quest locks, Coen getting stuck in houses, dead NPCs starting conversations, blocking dropping out, infinite loads on “On the Run,” and a soft-lock after following Sara. They also stop torches from growing without limit, retire a red pipe asset the team was not supposed to use, and stop outdated GameInput controller software from cutting frame rate on Steam.

The jokes in that thread were about the pipe and the torches. The useful part is the save fix and the quest blockers landing on Xbox six days after launch, with the studio saying more patches will follow.
What Happens If Coen’s Family Dies?
Konrad’s line on the clock is the one that matters after the million-copy graphic. Time is tied to the story. It does not shut the executable. Most jobs still make sense after day 30 because they were never wired to Brencis’s coronation. You can keep roaming Vale Sangora, mopping up work, and finding the things you skipped while the family was still a deadline.
You can also sprint. Mateusz said a player who walks straight at the castle can try to end the main quest in a couple of days, which is a brutal fight without allies. You can skip time and present yourself to Brencis early, which the studio does not recommend. The finale has to account for which lieutenants you killed, which you bargained with, and which friends you actually kept alive. Mateusz called those castle variants vastly different quests, including endings that never enter the castle at all.
That is the wager in the save file. A 160-person studio spent its NetEase money on a calendar you can fail without dying, then asked Xbox buyers to pay $69.99 for a game they cannot 100% in one run. A million copies says enough people took the deal. Series S at 30 FPS, a combat loop that still divides critics, and a September 9 patch for saves and stuck doors say the deal is not finished.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is The Blood of Dawnwalker on Xbox Game Pass?
The Xbox store page lists it as a paid Standard Edition at $69.99 with Play Anywhere, cloud saves, and Cloud Gaming, and it does not list Game Pass as an included tier. If that changes, it will be a later store update, not the September 3 launch offer.
Can You Rush the Ending in a Few Days?
Yes. Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz said you can make a beeline for Brencis’s castle and try to finish the family quest in a couple of in-game days, though the fight is built to punish a Coen who has not gathered allies or weakened the court first.
What Does the Collector’s Edition Include?
Bandai Namco’s Collector’s Edition is $199.99 and adds a Steelbook, a 33 x 40 cm Vale Sangora world map, a 60-page hardcover Physical World Compendium, a 23 cm PureArts Coen figurine, and the Eclipse digital extras (compendium, soundtrack, and comic) on top of the base game.
Do You Need to Pre-Order for the Sangoran Armor?
No. Every edition offered the Sangoran Wayfarer’s Armor Set as a pre-order bonus, and the Xbox store text says the same set can be obtained later in the game, so a September 9 purchase is not locked out of that gear.
Hotfix 1.0.4 is the build Xbox is downloading this week. The 480-unit bar is still the thing the studio wanted judged, and it is still the thing players are spending, skipping, or trying to mod.
