GTA Online Goes Free on Xbox as Take-Two Leans on Its Cash Engine

GTA Online is free on Xbox through July 21 as Take-Two leans on its recurring revenue engine while Rockstar’s GTA VI trailer stays silent.

GTA Online is free to download and play on Xbox through Tuesday, July 21, with no Xbox Game Pass subscription required. The offer landed days after Rockstar Games dropped its biggest content update in months, and weeks after Grand Theft Auto VI’s own marketing campaign went quiet. Any Xbox owner 18 or older can grab the game this weekend for nothing.

The harder question is why Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, is handing out free access to the franchise that already generates most of its profit. The answer sits in the company’s own earnings reports, and in the awkward silence coming from Rockstar just as pre-orders for its next game have been live for weeks without a new trailer to back them up.

How to Claim the Free Xbox Weekend

The offer runs through Microsoft’s Free Play Days program, and unlike some past promotions, it does not require any Xbox Game Pass tier for GTA Online itself. Anyone with a modern Xbox console and a broadband connection can download the game from the marketplace or the Xbox website and start playing immediately, age restrictions permitting.

PlayStation is running a parallel version of the same trial. According to ScreenRant, GTA Online is free to play without a PlayStation Plus membership as part of the same Kortz Center celebration.

  • Check eligibility – you need a modern Xbox console, a broadband connection, and to be 18 or older to install GTA Online.
  • Download through the marketplace – grab it directly from the Xbox Store or the Xbox website, no purchase or subscription prompt required for GTA Online or Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2.
  • Play through July 21 – the trial window closes Tuesday, after which you would need to own the game to continue.
  • Keep your save – progress made during the trial carries over automatically if you buy the game later.

Five Games, One Free Weekend

GTA Online is just one of five titles included in this round of Free Play Days, and the access terms differ sharply from game to game.

Game Subscription Needed Free Until Current Discount
GTA Online None Tuesday, July 21 Not discounted
Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 None Tuesday, July 21 75% off
Planet Zoo: Console Edition Xbox Game Pass Sunday, July 19 90% off
Crisol: Theater of Idols Xbox Game Pass Sunday, July 19 Not discounted
Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports Xbox Game Pass Sunday, July 19 70% off

Only GTA Online and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 skip the Game Pass requirement entirely, which is unusual for a promotion this size. That distinction alone signals which two titles Microsoft and Rockstar most want new hands on this weekend.

The Kortz Center Heist Lands Right on Schedule

Rockstar shipped the update days before the free trial opened. The developer describes the target location, the venue for the most dazzling soirees in Los Santos, as the setting for the game’s newest and most elaborate score.

It is being pitched as GTA Online’s biggest content release since the Cayo Perico Heist, and outlets covering the update have already flagged hidden clues in the mission’s art collection suggesting Rockstar plans further additions rather than treating this as a farewell update.

GTA Online’s Real Job Is Filling Take-Two’s Bank Account

Free access to a thirteen-year-old game only makes sense once you look at what that game is worth to its publisher. GTA Online is not filler content Take-Two can afford to give away. It is the company’s most reliable earner outside of a new mainline release.

  • 82% of Take-Two’s fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 bookings came from recurrent consumer spending, microtransactions and subscriptions rather than new game sales, up 7% year over year.
  • $6.72 billion in net bookings for fiscal 2026, up 19% year over year and roughly $750 million above the company’s own prior guidance.
  • 230 million lifetime units sold for GTA V, a number Take-Two keeps citing on earnings calls as evidence of the franchise’s staying power.
  • $8 billion to $8.2 billion is Take-Two’s own guidance for fiscal 2027, the year GTA VI actually ships.

Bank of America has leaned further into that logic. The bank raised its Take-Two price target and lifted its own fiscal 2028 bookings estimate for GTA Online specifically, according to a research note projecting sixty dollars in annual bookings per monthly active user, treating the old game’s engagement as a leading indicator for the new one.

Every free player this weekend is a potential future subscriber to GTA+, a possible future Shark Card buyer, or simply a warmer body for GTA VI’s eventual online mode. None of that requires Rockstar to spend a cent of GTA VI’s marketing budget.

Rockstar Has Gone Quiet on Trailer 3

Pre-orders for GTA VI opened June 25 at $79.99 for the standard edition and $99.99 for the ultimate edition. Rockstar has not released a third trailer since. As of a July 10 report, GTA 6 Trailer 3 has not dropped despite live pre-orders, per Forbes contributor Brian Mazique, who tracked the gap against Rockstar’s historical trailer cadence for Red Dead Redemption 2 and GTA V.

Take-Two’s next earnings call is expected in early August, one of the calendar windows analysts now watch for the missing footage. The launch date itself has not moved.

We believe Fiscal 2027 will establish new record levels of operating performance driven by the November 19th launch of Grand Theft Auto VI.

Take-Two chief executive Strauss Zelnick made that case to investors after the company’s fiscal 2026 earnings, tying a specific date to the company’s most aggressive revenue guidance in its history. GTA VI is set for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, a date Rockstar pushed back twice before landing on it. A PC version remains undated, with most reporting pointing to early 2027.

Xbox Keeps Leaning on Someone Else’s Live Service

This is not a one-off. Xbox’s Free Play Days program has spent 2026 rotating through other publishers’ biggest live titles almost every other week, including a lineup built around Call of Duty Black Ops 7 and Diablo IV just two weeks before this GTA Online trial, and an eighth-birthday celebration built around Sea of Thieves’ Maiden Voyage weekend back in March.

The pattern lines up with a broader gap in Xbox’s own release calendar. Xbox gaming boss Matt Booty has already said the company’s exclusivity strategy now rests on just two games, and one of Xbox’s biggest remaining first-party bets, Fable, was recently delayed to February 2027 to clear a path around GTA VI. With its own new exclusives thin on the ground, free weekends built on other publishers’ back catalogs do the work of keeping Xbox Series X/S engagement numbers up.

Xbox’s own infrastructure is already tangled up in GTA VI regardless. A GTA VI title ID has already surfaced in Microsoft’s backend systems, a sign that whatever comes after this free weekend, Xbox is preparing its storefront for the same launch Take-Two has staked its next fiscal year on.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need Xbox Game Pass to play GTA Online free this weekend?

No. GTA Online and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 are both playable without any Xbox Game Pass tier through July 21. The other three games in this round of Free Play Days, Planet Zoo: Console Edition, Crisol: Theater of Idols and Looney Tunes: Wacky World of Sports, do require a Game Pass subscription and are only free through July 19.

Will my progress carry over if I buy GTA Online after the trial ends?

Yes. Once the Free Play Days window closes, any progress made during the trial stays saved on your Xbox. Buying the full game afterward, or accessing it later through Game Pass, lets you continue exactly where the free weekend left off.

Is GTA Online free on PlayStation too?

Yes. PlayStation is running its own version of the same promotion tied to the Kortz Center Heist, and it does not require a PlayStation Plus subscription either, matching the no-subscription terms Xbox is offering.

When is GTA VI coming to PC?

Rockstar has not announced a PC release date. Reporting points to early 2027, following the same console-first pattern Rockstar used with GTA V, which arrived on PC roughly eighteen months after its 2013 console debut.
