OneDrive Sync Freezes on Older Windows 10 PCs

Microsoft ended OneDrive sync-app updates on Windows 10 21H2 and earlier on August 15, 2026. The desktop client was not switched off. It stopped moving.

The next production build, 26.150.0804.0010, shipped on August 21 with a new Activity Center link tool those PCs will never get. Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11 keep receiving client updates through October 10, 2028.

The Sync App Stopped Getting Fixes

Microsoft’s lifecycle page now uses past tense. Support for the OneDrive desktop app on Windows 10 21H2 and earlier ended on August 15. The same page still lists OneDrive support dates through 2028 for Windows 10 22H2 and Windows 11.

That is a servicing cut, not a cloud shutdown. Personal and work libraries stay online. File Explorer placeholders, Known Folder Move, and background upload keep running only if the copy already on the disk keeps talking to the service.

The August 15 OneDrive cutoff for 21H2 was flagged in Microsoft 365 Message Center advisory MC1426708 in July. Campus IT shops copied the same lines into local notices. Microsoft’s stated reason was that the change lines OneDrive up with the Windows lifecycle policy and lets the company put ongoing work on supported operating systems.

The app may continue to function, but it will not receive new updates and compatibility and functionality are not guaranteed.

Microsoft, OneDrive system requirements

Reseller posts that went around in July said old PCs would lose sync, backup, and desktop access on the day. That is not what Microsoft published. The company still hosts 32-bit and 64-bit installers for those older Windows 10 builds, just as it still hosts the Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 builds after January 1, 2022.

WHAT WE KNOW

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

• A kill date: Microsoft has not named a day when frozen clients will be blocked from the service.
• Field breakage: There is no public tally of pre-22H2 PCs that stopped syncing after August 15.

The risk sits in the next service change, not in a countdown clock. Authentication, encryption, or API shifts land in the moving client first. Frozen copies keep last week’s binary until something on the server side stops answering them.

Six Days Later, Production Moved On

OneDrive’s Windows production ring does not pause for unsupported SKUs. The OneDrive sync app release notes now carry a warning at the top: the app needs Windows 10 22H2 or Windows 11 to receive updates, and after August 15 devices on earlier Windows 10 versions stay on whatever build they already have.

On August 14, production shipped 26.145.0728.0011, a reliability build and the last weekly drop that could still reach a fully patched 21H2 PC. On August 21, six days after the cutoff, 26.150.0804.0010 began rolling out. That build adds a per-item control in Activity Center so a user can copy a link to a recently synced file. Pre-22H2 machines are locked out of that drop and of every drop after it.

Some work that landed just before the line is frozen in place too. Build 26.139.0720.0007 on August 7 added self-service file exclusions for work and school accounts, plus a policy so admins can hide those controls. Build 26.123.0628.0001 on July 17 brought a desktop photos browser for personal Microsoft accounts. A PC that had not yet taken those rings is stuck without them.

Enterprise deferred ring is slower on purpose. Its current listed release is still 26.078.0426.0002, with 26.123.0628.0001 targeted for October 5, 2026. That lag only helps 22H2 and Windows 11 PCs that admins held back. It does nothing for 21H2.

Who Still Runs Older Windows 10 Builds?

Microsoft does not publish a 21H2-versus-22H2 split. The wider Windows 10 remainder is still large enough that the freeze is not a footnote.

WINDOWS 10’S REMAINING FOOTPRINT

• Web traffic: StatCounter’s September 2026 desktop Windows figures put Windows 10 at 28.73% and Windows 11 at 70.39%.
• Managed fleets: Lansweeper, scanning millions of devices, put Windows 10 at 16.9% of Windows PCs and Windows 11 at 78.8%.
• Small firms: The same Lansweeper cut found 21.4% of SMB machines still on Windows 10, with cost the usual brake on new hardware.
• Sectors: Among organizations still running Windows 10, Lansweeper put 23% in healthcare and 18% in manufacturing.

Esben Dochy, principal technical evangelist for SecOps at Lansweeper, said smaller firms feel the hardware bill harder because they lack bulk buying power and dedicated IT staff, and they often face less insurance or compliance pressure to move.

A leftover Windows 10 PC is not automatically a leftover 21H2 PC. Consumer Extended Security Updates only enroll Windows 10 22H2 Home, Pro, Pro Education, or Workstation with the latest cumulative installed. Microsoft’s Windows 10 end of support options point holdouts at that ESU path or at a new Windows 11 PC. A 21H2 box cannot take consumer ESU at all. Its operating-system support ended on June 13, 2023, more than three years before the OneDrive client freeze.

Lansweeper also counted an average of 1,903 active CVEs on a Windows 10 device against 652 on Windows 11, about 2.9 times as many. That gap is an OS problem. A frozen OneDrive binary on the same disk adds a second unpatched process that still holds cloud credentials and local files.

LTSC 2021 Keeps OS Patches Without Client Updates

The awkward case is Long-Term Servicing Channel. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSC 2021 and Windows 10 IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 are 21H2, build 19044. They were never meant to take 22H2. They still get operating-system security updates.

Enterprise LTSC 2021, which shipped on November 16, 2021, reaches end of updates on January 12, 2027. IoT Enterprise LTSC 2021 runs to January 13, 2032. Microsoft’s OneDrive cutoff names Windows 10 21H2 and earlier and does not list an LTSC exception. Microsoft also warns, on its IoT documentation, that apps built for the general Windows 10 channel may have limited support on LTSC.

THE SUPPORT SPLIT BY VERSION

A kiosk, shop-floor PC, or clinic device on LTSC 2021 can still take a Windows security rollup this month and be running a OneDrive build that Microsoft will not patch. Teams that kept OneDrive off those images are fine. Teams that used it for Desktop, Documents, and Pictures backup now have an unserviced client on a still-serviced OS.

October 10, 2028 Is the Shared Deadline

The August freeze is the first app-level cut after Windows 10 itself left support on October 14, 2025. The date Microsoft is herding the remaining 22H2 fleet toward is October 10, 2028, a little more than two years after the 21H2 client freeze.

THE WINDOWS 10 ONEDRIVE CLOCK

1. January 1, 2022: OneDrive desktop support ends on Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 guidance for Microsoft 365 Apps matches that last date. Devices on Windows 10 keep getting feature updates and Copilot, where eligible, until Version 2608 ships. They then stay on Version 2608 and take only security updates until October 10, 2028. The OneDrive desktop app on 22H2 follows the same window. On older Windows 10, the company says the desktop app will no longer update.

Consumer ESU ends on October 12, 2027, 364 days before that shared 2028 date. A 22H2 PC can still get OneDrive client builds for almost a year after its consumer OS patches stop. A 21H2 PC already lost both.

Support for Microsoft 365 Apps on Windows 10 is already thinner. If a bug shows up only on Windows 10, with or without ESU, Microsoft 365 support will ask the customer to move to Windows 11. If they cannot, the help is troubleshooting only, with no bug logs and no product-change requests.

What the Browser Path Leaves Out

Microsoft’s fallback is the OneDrive website in a current browser. Edge, Chrome, Firefox, and Safari still work. Internet Explorer does not. The current OneDrive system requirements also keep Windows Server 2016 or newer on the supported list, and they still ask for a 1.6 GHz processor and 1 GB of RAM on the desktop app.

The website can upload, download, share, and preview. It does not replace the client that IT actually deployed.

WHAT THE WEB APP CANNOT DO

• Known Folder Move: Desktop, Documents, and Pictures stay ordinary local folders unless the desktop client is redirecting them.
• Files On-Demand: Explorer placeholders and online-only files need the sync app.
• SharePoint libraries: Work and school file sync, the other half of the same client, is in the same freeze.
• Offline editing: A browser tab does not keep a working copy when the network drops.
• Activity Center tools: New desktop-only controls, including the August 21 copy-link item, never appear in the browser.

Moving a 21H2 PC to 22H2 restores the client pipeline without buying Windows 11 hardware, if the PC can take that enablement package. Moving to Windows 11 is the path Microsoft wants. On supported systems the company is still spending on the client, including a native OneDrive sync engine on Mac that Microsoft says runs about twice as fast as the older Mac build.

The 21H2 freeze is the cheap cut. Those builds were already outside Windows support, aside from LTSC. The 2028 date on 22H2 is the one that matches Office. Until then, older PCs keep whatever OneDrive build they had on August 15, and Microsoft will not fix it.
