Windows began favoring its own inbox printer driver over manufacturer drivers on July 1, a switch most PC owners will never notice happening under the hood. Microsoft calls the new framework Windows Ready Print, and it is the company’s biggest overhaul of Windows printing in years.

The bigger shift is easy to miss. Microsoft has spent months promoting a simpler, driverless future built on the Internet Printing Protocol, yet the print servers running most offices and the label and receipt printers stacked in warehouses and store counters are not part of this rollout yet. How Microsoft handles that gap will decide whether the plan actually holds up.

The Driver Ranking Flip Nobody Noticed

Microsoft folded what it used to call the Modern Print Platform into a new name, Windows Ready Print, surfacing it inside Windows 11 Insider builds back in May. TechSpot was among the first outlets to detail the framework’s arrival. The mechanical change that actually took effect on July 1 was narrower than the branding suggested: for any newly installed printer on Windows 11 or Windows Server 2025, Windows now ranks its own inbox Internet Printing Protocol (IPP, a standard for sending print jobs over a network) driver above whatever driver the manufacturer supplies.

Existing printers keep working exactly as they did. Only new installations shift to the inbox path, and only when the printer carries Mopria certification, the mark issued by the printer-industry Mopria Alliance to confirm a device supports IPP printing and eSCL scanning without extra software.

Redmond’s own documentation frames the operating system’s preferred way of talking to printers, covering IPP, eSCL scanning, and Universal Print, and working the same way whether the PC runs on x86 or Arm silicon.

Why Microsoft Wants Printer Drivers Gone

Print drivers run with elevated system privileges, which makes them an unusually dangerous piece of software to leave unpatched. The 2021 PrintNightmare flaw showed exactly how bad that risk could get, letting attackers run code through the print spooler with system-level access on machines around the world.

That vulnerability did not single-handedly force Microsoft’s hand, but it made the case hard to argue against. Vendor drivers vary wildly in age and quality, and some have shipped for over a decade without a meaningful security review. Removing the need to install them at all closes off an entire category of attack surface rather than patching it printer by printer.

Insider telemetry that Microsoft has already collected shows the direction of travel. More than 80% of newly connected printers in home environments were landing on an inbox driver before this default even changed, evidence that most modern hardware barely needed the old vendor packages to begin with.

What Happens To Label Printers And Receipt Printers?

Most modern network printers already qualify for the switch, and Microsoft says more than 120 million printers sold to date carry Mopria certification. The exceptions cluster in one corner of the market: label printers, receipt printers, and other specialty devices common in retail and logistics that were never built around IPP in the first place.

IT staff testing Windows Protected Print Mode, the stricter enforcement layer built on top of Windows Ready Print since March, have already run into that wall.

Our Zebra and Dymo printers just don’t show up when protected mode is enforced. We’ll have to keep them on a legacy VLAN with firewalled RAW printing.

One IT tester described the workaround in a Windows Forum discussion during the feature’s testing period. Microsoft’s own cloud print service admits label printer support remains limited even now, while ordinary page printers get full treatment.

Print Servers Are Still Playing By The Old Rules

Plenty of offices do not connect a printer straight to a laptop. They print through a shared server that handles queues, accounting codes, and secure release, and Windows Ready Print does not touch how a client machine talks to that server. If the server itself keeps using vendor drivers, clients keep receiving vendor drivers, no matter what the new default says on the desktop.

Microsoft’s fix for that gap is not out yet. A server-side update enabling IPP-based driver isolation on Windows Server is expected in early 2027, well over a year after the desktop default changed. Until then, Microsoft is pointing large organizations toward pairing the shift with its cloud-based print connector, built to remove the print server from the picture entirely rather than patch it.

That is a heavier lift than flipping a Settings toggle. It requires devices joined to Microsoft Entra ID, the company’s cloud identity service, and it currently supports page printers only, leaving plotters and other specialty output devices outside its scope as well.

Three Settings, One Confusing Toggle

Windows now exposes three effective states rather than one simple switch, and the difference matters more to IT admins than to home users clicking through Settings.

The consumer-facing control sits under Settings, then Bluetooth and Devices, then Printers and Scanners, as a toggle labeled “Default install printer using Windows Ready Print.” Administrators get a parallel lever in Group Policy, under Administrative Templates and Printers, called “Configure Windows Ready Print driver ranking,” which can force the new behavior across a fleet or block it outright. Once Windows Protected Print Mode gets switched on, that toggle locks and cannot be turned back off while the stricter mode stays active.

A partner-facing rollout note spells out both controls in detail, and Microsoft frames the Settings toggle as the simplest lever for most environments, saving Group Policy for organizations that need to enforce a fleet-wide standard.

What Fleet Managers Are Checking First

Reaction inside Windows Forum and Windows Insider threads has skewed practical rather than alarmed. Testers running Windows Protected Print Mode since March described the feedback as largely positive, with complaints concentrated on that narrow band of specialty hardware rather than everyday office printers.

The advice circulating among IT administrators looks similar across most threads.

  • Audit the printer fleet for Mopria certification before assuming a device will migrate cleanly.
  • Pilot a small group on the inbox IPP path and confirm trays, duplexing, stapling, and scanning still behave the same way.
  • Update firmware on printers that support IPP but ship with it switched off by default.
  • Document exceptions for label printers, receipt printers, and anything tied to a departmental workflow.
  • Leave the Group Policy setting alone on any device where the vendor driver still delivers features the inbox driver cannot.

None of that is exotic advice. It is close to how IT teams already treat any default change buried in a Patch Tuesday release, just applied to hardware nobody likes thinking about until it stops working.

The Staged Countdown Continues Into 2027

July 1 was not the first milestone and will not be the last. Microsoft has been building toward this for years, and the remaining steps are already dated.

  1. September 2023: Microsoft announces the end of servicing for legacy third-party V3 and V4 printer drivers.
  2. January 15, 2026: Windows Update stops accepting new third-party printer drivers for Windows 11 and Windows Server 2025.
