Final Fantasy Resonance’s New Trailer Gives Xbox an Equal Day-One Seat

Square Enix’s new trailer confirms Final Fantasy Resonance launches day one on Xbox and the Microsoft Store, though it still lacks a Game Pass listing.

Square Enix released a new trailer for Final Fantasy Resonance on Friday, and Xbox owners do not have to wait this time. The nearly three minute clip leans on HD-2D pixel art, showing off summons, boss fights and story beats that look pulled from the Super Nintendo era while running on modern hardware.

Final Fantasy Resonance launches October 22, 2026, day one on Xbox Series X|S, the Microsoft Store and Steam, alongside PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Switch. It still has no Xbox Game Pass listing, and Square Enix has not said whether that changes before launch.

A Trailer Built to Look Like It Never Left the SNES

The trailer opens on Rain, a squadron commander, and Lasswell, his childhood friend, sent out on a royal order to check a weakened barrier at the Earth Shrine. Inside, they run into Veritas of the Dark, a man in black armor who shatters the Earth Crystal and scatters their entire force.

They race home to find Grandshelt under attack. After the king’s own rescue attempt fails, Rain and Lasswell team up with a mystery girl named Fina to protect the crystals still scattered across the world, the setup that carries the rest of the game.

It is not a simple reskin of the mobile game it grew out of.

It’s based on the first story arc of the mobile game, Final Fantasy Brave Exvius, and reworked for the console experience, but this is not a direct port of that game.

Keisuke Nakashima, the game’s producer, said that in an earlier interview, according to Nintendo Insider. Square Enix first laid out the console plan in June, when it confirmed it was reviving the shuttered mobile RPG for Xbox and PC during a Nintendo Direct. Xbox’s own storefront listing sells the pitch in a single line: the game returns players to the pixel art world of Final Fantasy, evolved from its classic roots.

Xbox and the Microsoft Store Get an Equal Seat at Launch

That single line matters more than it sounds. Square Enix has a long history of treating Xbox as an afterthought. Final Fantasy XVI launched as a PlayStation 5 exclusive and did not reach Xbox Series X|S or the Microsoft Store until its own belated Xbox and Windows debut last year, well after the PlayStation crowd had already finished it.

Resonance skips that wait entirely. Every platform, including Xbox Series X|S and the Microsoft Store, gets the same October 22 release date, with no timed exclusivity window for anyone.

It also lands inside a genuinely busy stretch for Xbox role playing games. Resonance’s day-one arrival follows Microsoft’s push to stock the platform with story-driven RPGs, a lineup that also includes Fable’s uncut gameplay demo, which gave players their clearest look yet at that long-delayed reboot.

Is Final Fantasy Resonance Coming to Xbox Game Pass?

No confirmation exists yet. Game8’s release tracker lists Final Fantasy Resonance as not announced for Xbox Game Pass, PlayStation Plus or Nintendo Switch Online as of this writing, meaning every buyer on every platform pays full price at launch, from $49.99 for the standard edition up to $209.99 for the Collector’s Edition.

That puts every platform on equal footing in one sense. Nobody gets a subscription shortcut into this game at launch, Xbox included, so the day-one parity is a purchase decision rather than a download already sitting in a library.

A Mobile Game That Doesn’t Exist Anymore

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius ran for roughly a decade before Square Enix pulled the plug in stages. The English language version shut down first.

Square Enix said as much in its own farewell notice on the game’s official account: the app’s own shutdown announcement confirmed service ended October 30, 2024. The Japanese version outlasted it by another year, and Square Enix shut that version down on the game’s own tenth anniversary that October, according to the mobile game’s tenth-anniversary shutdown reported by Crunchyroll and several other outlets.

Nakashima built Resonance because the original frustrated him. He has said he felt “frustrated” watching players pass over Brave Exvius the first time, and has described the source material as “too good to become unplayable,” according to GamesRadar+. Less than a year after the mobile version’s last server went dark, its opening chapter comes back as a full priced console release.

The HD-2D Family Square Enix Keeps Growing

Resonance is credited to Square Enix’s Team Asano, the internal group built around producer Tomoya Asano, working alongside external co-developer Lancarse. It is the first Final Fantasy game built in the HD-2D style, but far from that style’s first outing.

  • Octopath Traveler – the 2018 role playing game that introduced HD-2D, mixing detailed pixel character sprites with three dimensional backgrounds and layered lighting
  • Bravely Default – the earlier RPG series that helped shape the visual language Team Asano later refined
  • Dragon Quest I, II and III HD-2D Remake – the recent remakes that proved the style could carry one of Square Enix’s oldest franchises

Nakashima has acknowledged how difficult it was to top those existing HD-2D games, telling reporters at a Japan Expo panel that the comparison pushed his team toward a more dynamic camera and deeper character animation rather than a simple repeat of what came before.

Cloud and Tidus Join the Fight as Visions

Combat stays turn based, but with a stagger system familiar to recent Final Fantasy games. Hit an enemy’s weak point and it stuns them, cracking their defenses open for extra turns and a Resonance attack, the game’s term for its cinematic finishing moves.

Traditional summons return too. Ifrit, Shiva and Titan grant extra rounds before closing with a signature attack, Hellfire or Diamond Dust among them.

Visions work differently. They are crystallized memories of Final Fantasy heroes pulled from across the series, equipped to fight alongside the party. The stronger the bond, the more of that hero’s abilities carry over into battle. Expect Cloud, Tidus, the Warrior of Light, Cecil, Bartz, Squall and Zidane among the roster.

Outside battle, cities lean on small diversions like a jump rope contest and Mog Tag, while a Sanctum of Light always holds a new Vision crystal to collect. Side paths lead to the Colosseum for monster gauntlets or the Chamber of Arms, where legendary weapons wait behind the creatures still guarding them. Two locations anchor the map: Dilmagia, the steel metropolis where the world’s airship technology began, and Olderion, a water rich capital guarded by the Wardens of the Waters.

Three Editions, Starting at $49.99

Square Enix and Lancarse lock in three ways to buy in, each priced well apart from the others.

Edition Price What You Get
Standard Edition $49.99 Base game across all six storefronts, day one
Digital Deluxe Edition $59.99 Base game plus a set of preorder bonus items
Collector’s Edition $209.99 Premium physical bundle; exact contents not yet detailed by Square Enix

The Microsoft Store side of that math got a little easier this year. Download speeds on the storefront stopped crawling after years of throttling got fixed on Windows, one less friction point for anyone grabbing Resonance there on release day.

Pre-orders for the Switch and Switch 2 digital editions opened Friday alongside the trailer. Xbox, PlayStation and Steam versions follow before Final Fantasy Resonance launches everywhere on October 22, 2026.
